This unassuming,rather isolated town was once of grear importance.King Canute [935-1035]
made it his capital and later several large priories were established here.
Some of their ruins are still visable,but the steep mound overlooking the town
is all that remains of the Norman castle.
Below it is a statue of Thetford`s famous son,Thomas Paine,author of `The Rights of Man`,
who was born in the town in 1737.His and other stories are told in the Ancient House Museum.
